Running for President in the 2000 election, he lost the popular vote by a very slim margin, but won the electoral vote from the current Vice President, Albert A. Gore, Jr. The electoral votes of Florida became a critical factor in the outcome of the election, and continued to be vigorously fought over for a month after election day. Although Gore still won the popular vote, numerous inconsistencies surfaced which indicated widespread corruption of the voting process by Gore supporters and insiders. Enough corruption, in fact, that Bush may have clearly won both popular and electoral votes had the race been clean.
