Born as Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. on August 4, 1961 to a Kenyan father and a white American mother. He has two children, daughters, with his wife Michelle Obama. He grew up in Honolulu Hawaii and Jakarta, Indonesia. He currently is the junior United States Senator from Illinois, and a candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. He attended and graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. After working as a lawyer, he served in the Illinois Senate from 1997 until 2004. After failing to win a seat in the US House of Representatives in 2000, he ran for US Senate beginning in January 2003, and won the election with 70% of the vote in 2004. In February of 2007, Obama announced his bid for US President in the 2008 Presidential Elections. He has cosponsored legislation to limit and control conventional weapons, election fraud and lobbying, global warming and the environment. Obama has vocally promoted ending the war in Iraq, increased oil and energy independence, and implementing universal health care.
